Well screens are made of a continuous stainless steel V shaped wire. The distance between the wire strand is from .006" to .035" for each screen. The correct opening between each wire is determined on site when a sand sample is collected. The screen opening is sized to hold back 40% to 50% of the sand. The fine sand is worked out of the formation by developing the well, leaving just the coarse sand next to the well screen. This allows the maximum amount of water to enter the well sand-free and reduces the effects of encrustation of the well screen.
